Saint Vincent's Finest

Image result for soca

We continue this blog by talking about something that is not always talked about in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. These are the country's musicians. I rescind my prior statement by altering it and saying that although the musicians are talked about, it is more than often done in a negative way. Especially during Carnival time. We would delve into the lives of three of Saint Vincent's finest; Kevin Lyttle, Gamal "Skinny Fabulous" Doyle and finally Rodney Smalls.

Kevin Lyttle

Kevin Lyttle
Lescott Kevin Lyttle Coombs was born on the 14th of September, 1976, in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. He is mostly known for his worldwide hit "Turn me on", which he recorded in 2004 with Raeon "Madzart" Primus. Before this, Lyttle was a customs officer and also a disc jockey. Prior to the success of "turn me on", Lyttle was signed with Atlantic Records in 2003, where his turn me on became even more successful in 2004, when he remixed it with Spragga Benz. Although his other songs were not as successful as turn me on, Lyttle was able to show the world that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines had talent. Hence, he is one of SVG's finest artist.

Rodney Smalls

Rodney Small, influencing young lives with pan
Rodney Small
Finally, we come to Rodney Smalls, a proficient pannist.  He regards himself as a humble young man from the community of Sion Hill. He has being playing pan from the age of seven when curiosity drew him to the sound of pan from the Girls' High School compound. He was then taught by Francis "Pesa" Llewelyn, after he asked Small if he wanted to learn pan, in which he replied in the affirmative. Small played with the Sion Hill Euphonium, where they won five junior panorama titles. Small graduated from the Jamaica School of Performing Arts, then went to work at the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. Now, he tutors young aspiring pannists, has a show called the Steel Expressions which is an annual show and he also does both local and overseas gigs. He is featured in the song "This island is mind" with aforementioned soca artieste, Gamal "Skinny Fabulous" Doyle, and also Hance John, "Love of Pan".

Is the Amazona Guildingi under any threat?

  •  Hunting for food, trapping for the cage-bird trade and habitat loss were the principal causes of this species decline.
  • Deforestation has been the result of forestry activities, the expansion of banana cultivation, charcoal production, the loss of nesting-trees felled by trappers seeking young birds for trade and natural events such as hurricanes and volcanoes.
  • The introduction of the nine-banded armadillo, undermined large trees causing them to topple, reducing a large number of suitable nest trees.

Therefore, this species of bird is under threat.

REMEMBER;
  • The Amazona Guildingi is the national bird of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
  • The bird's plumage colors are unique to the island.
  • The bird is an endangered species.
  • We can avoid deforestation and other forestry activities to prevent the decline of the population of the bird.
